HDPVRCapture and Colossus

Most people are unaware of this, but Kernel Labs isn’t just a Linux shop. We actually do a fair bit of work under OSX as well. In fact, Steven Toth created the very popular HDPVRCapture application prior to the founding of Kernel Labs.

Aside from the copyright notice, most people are unaware that HDPVRCapture is a Kernel Labs product. That said, in the future we’re going to be providing some more discussion on HDPVRCapture on kernellabs.com, starting with some “behind the scenes” looks into what’s we’re working on.

First off, let’s talk about Colossus. The Hauppauge Colossus is a PCIe form factor HD capture card (supports HDMI and component inputs). It’s got many of the same features as the original HD-PVR but its an internal card (hence no power supply or cables to connect it to the PC). As a techie, I have to admit it’s really nice to see a single HDMI cable go into the back of the desktop PC, instead of having power, USB, three component video cables, and two audio cables dangling about. It just feels “cleaner”.

Since it’s release about eighteen months ago we’ve heard a number of customers asking to see Colossus supported with HDPVRCapture. Well, these requests haven’t fallen on silent ears, and I’m happy to show that we’re making considerable progress on that goal:

We’ve got the basic driver support implemented, and are in the process of integrating the functionality into the core HDPVRCapture application. We’re not ready to announce a release date for the Colossus enabled version, but we did want to show you that “we’re working on it”.

We’ve got some other goodies coming as well as support for new hardware, so stay tuned!

  1. how to config Hauppauge Colossus with Ubuntu Linux?
I have tried with VLC but no luck 🙁
    # uname -a
    Linux MY-PC 3.12.6-031206-generic #201312201218 SMP Fri Dec 20 17:20:06 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    Thanks in advance.

    • Hi Satriani,

The Hauppauge Colossus isn’t supported under Linux (we have a Linux driver, but it’s only sold to commercial customers in high volume).

      Regards,

      Devin

  2. This is very sad. For normal people, you offer no solution?
I bought it today (used for $40) and thought that it will work thanks to you.
What should I do now? Can you help me, or do I have to sell it now?

    • Correct. There is no solution forthcoming for general consumers. The support overhead is too high and there are too many different combinations of environments that a use could be running.

      Regards,

      Devin
